People In Music History
Cowell, Henry [Dixon] (1897-1965) American composer and pianist, given to
musical experiment; developed the idea of clusters of adjacent notes played,
e.g., with forearm on the piano, and also extended this to orchestral
technique, co-inventor of the "Rhythmicon," electrical instrument reproducing
predetermined rhythms. Prolific composer for orchestra, band, and various
instrumental groups; works (some with synthesized titles like Synchrony,
Tocanta) include 21 symphonies, Hymns and Fuguing Tunes (after Billings),
opera, works for piano; also teacher and writer.
